Description
Calico is a plain-woven fabric that is unbleached and un-dyed. Often referred to as ‘loomstate’ as it is sold in the same condition as it comes off the loom. It has not undergone any treatment or finishing.
Sturdy enough for bags and aprons as it can withstand wear and tear better than some other fabrics. It is also attractive enough to use as a base fabric for embroidery or cushion backs. Perfect for soft furnishing projects and curtain linings, tablecloths, and napkins.
The affordable cost of Calico makes it ideal for dressmakers’ toiles and student projects. Many designers will use Calico to create a mock up a garment before making up in expensive fabric.
It has a natural, rustic appeal and is a model fabric for teaming up with other natural fabrics such as hessian, muslin, and linen. Calico also takes dye and paint well and is perfect for covering artists canvases.
We would recommend washing before use as Calico shrinks, wash on a cool or ward wash at no more than 30 degrees. The fabric will also soften after washing.
