What you will need to start
- Fabric (enough to cover a cushion)
- Pins
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Iron
Measure and cut the fabric
Measure the height and width of your fabric and add 2.5cm to each measurement for seam allowances.
Cut one piece of fabric for the front of the cushion and two pieces of fabric for the back of the cushion. The back pieces should overlap by about 15cm to create the envelope closure.
Hem the back pieces
On each of the back pieces, fold one long edge over by approximately 1.25cm and iron flat and then fold another 1.25cm. Sew along the folded edge to create a neat hem.
Assemble the cover
Lay the front fabric piece right side up. Place the two back pieces on top, right sides down with the hemmed edges overlapping in the centre. Pin around the edges to hold everything in place.
Sew the edges
Sew around all sides of the cover with 1.25cm seam allowance. Trim the corners to reduce bulk but be careful not to cut through the stitching.
Turn and finish
Turn the cover right side out through the envelope opening. Push out the corners to make them sharp. Insert your cushion through the envelope opening.
